DOC-02 / APISAT
Conventional imaging systems measure light intensity. APISAT's instrument measures the polarization state of reflected light, providing additional information about surface structure, roughness, and material composition.
Polarimetric instruments are traditionally flown on large, expensive platforms. APISAT explores how polarimetric sensing can be implemented as a compact payload compatible with CubeSat architectures, for integration into future small satellite missions.
Every subsystem is designed and built by students and early-career engineers under rigorous technical oversight. This is a genuine research mission structured to produce engineers who can lead the next phase of Ukrainian space development.
WHY POLARIMETRY
Polarization describes the orientation of light waves. When light interacts with surfaces or particles, its polarization state changes depending on physical properties — structure, composition, scattering behavior. By measuring polarization alongside intensity, polarimetric sensors reveal information that conventional imaging systems cannot capture.
